Building a Portfolio of my Own
The Graphic Design Industry is constantly booming and changing. For the past 4 years I’ve been pushing myself to learn as much as I can to brace myself for the design working world. I fully enjoy being able to create designs for myself as well as completing projects for the courses within the major. I also am eager to broaden my knowledge in this industry, so I’ve been deep diving on the internet for blogs and good sources of information. I want to learn and grow as an artist and designer.
I first looked at the blog site, JustCreative, and I found an article titled, “10+ Best UI Tools in 2022”, Written by Jacob Cas. While looking at the list I only recognized three of the softwares. Those being Adobe XD, Invision Studio and Sketch. Adobe XD was a given since it’s ranked editor’s choice. The second is called Marvel, which is the best for designers on a budget (like me). It’s a software built for anyone which I respect. This article alone is helpful for a young designer to be made aware of other sources for creating. The other platforms on the top 10 list are: Figma, Mock Flow, Axure, Photo.io, Balsamiq, and Zeplin.
The Just Creative blog is a good source of graphic design information and advice. I also wanted to look into factual blog posts regarding something deeper. I found some interesting blog titles on a popular site called, Inkbot Design. The article that caught my attention is labeled, Why Do We Need Logos? Branding Psychology”. I like learning about the psychology behind why we as a society do certain things. The article speaks on the deeper meanings of logos and why we create them. They are typically made to show and message, more than just a pretty design. Designers think about what the colors they are using symbolizes and if it accurately describes their brand. The logo should “cover what it stands for” right away. The most successful logos have an impact that can stick with people for a long time. People typically go for familiar-looking logos when shopping for something. The whole color psychology behind logos is truly interesting to read about. There are certain colors to make viewers feel certain ways. That makes colors a huge influence in the consumers eyes.
“If we want to reduce waste and its devastating impact on climate change, we'll need to see a radical change in almost every sector. It's a huge and daunting task, but there are signs that the transformation is already underway.”
-Tom May
I looked into one more blog called, Creative Boom, which has many different outlets to get messages to their audiences. They have podcasts, articles, newsletters, features, and their latest news feeds. They also separate the news with their creative articles which is a nice layout to keep the site organized and easy to follow. I clicked on one of their creative articles titled, “What designers are doing to help save the planet, and how to help”, written by Tom May. This article struck a chord with me since I’m all about raising awareness on environmental issues. Our planet is so important and we need to find ways to keep it a safe and healthy place. I read the article like a sponge, trying to soak up everything. Their team recently launched a book called,Never Waste a Good Crisis, which is about 31 optimistic designers working to reinvent the relationship humans have with waste. The book has very fresh ideas on what we as designers can do. The game-changing group assembled in 2011 and have been creating ways for all these years. This proves that designers have more influence than they think on our lives. One of the big experiments in the book is about Recycling SeaWeed. How they do that is by replacing petroleum-based plastics. This works in about anything such as shampoo bottles, tableware and furniture. It is impressive what collaborative, creative minds can do and are capable of. I hope that one day I can work on an environment related project.
